Not just a great song by the Clash… London’s Burning!

London's BurningNeed something to heat up your Saturday night? We had purchased jalapenos last week and were thinking of a few ways we could use these in a drink. A quick web search brought up a few interesting possibilities including the London’s Burning, a mix of muddled lime, avocado and jalapenos.

The cocktail was invented by Anthony Go, a bartender at Mahi Mah’s Seafood Restaurant & Sushi Saloon in Virginia Beach, WV. If you’re in that neighborhood, drop by and have the real thing.

Ingredients

  • 2 1/2 oz of London Dry Gin
  • 1 jalapeno pepper
  • 1/4 avocado
  • juice of 1/2 a lime

Preparation

Muddle the juice of half a lime, slices from half a jalapeno and 1/4 avocado pulp to the bottom of a cocktail shaker. Add ice cubes and gin, shake vigorously for 30 seconds. Strain into a chilled cocktail glass and garnish with the other half of the jalapeno.

Cheers, and here’s the Clash!

Pretty in Pink… Watermelon Gin Fizz

Watermelon Gin Fizz

Watermelon Gin Fizz

Few things helped to beat the summer heat when we were kids than slices of delicious watermelon. The summer heat and humidity seems relentless this year, so we thought it would be a great idea to pick up some watermelon. As we returned to Madtini headquarters we began thinking about what kind of cocktails we could make using watermelon, and the search was on.

We found this great recipe by Donna Diegel from Providence, R.I. on examiner.com. While the preparation seemed a bit daunting at first, our intoxicology crew sprang into action cutting up watermelon to get this drink started. After a few minutes of blending, straining, mixing we had a table full of these tasty and refreshing drinks.

Ingredients (makes 4-6-ish)

  • 1 1/2 cups of gin
  • 2 cups strained watermelon juice
  • 10 mint leaves, chopped fine
  • 1 cups simple syrup
  • Juice of 1 lemon
  • Fresh mint sprigs for garnish
  • Club soda

Preparation

Cut up 1/2 small seedless watermelon (removing rind). Drop into a blender with the simple syrup and 10 chopped up mint leaves. Blend, then strain through two sheets of paper towel places in the bottom of a colander. Squeeze the paper towel to get the rest of the juice through. Add the juice of one lemon and chill in the freezer until its cold.

Serve over ice with chilled gin, add club soda and garnish with a sprig or mint and a wedge of watermelon.

Cheers and happy Saturday chilling!

Welcome back Mad Men – the Disaronno Martini

Disaronno Martini

Disaronno Martini

Last August we started Madtini as a way to celebrate our love of Mad Men and 60s cocktail culture, and our Labs intoxicologists enjoyed mixing up classic drink recipes throughout Season 3. Tonight, we’ll see the rise of the new agency Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce – and catch up with Don, Roger, Peggy, Pete, Joan and the rest of the gang.

We’re celebrating the Season 4 premiere with a martini with an Italian twist. We’re bringing Scotland and Italy together, using equal parts Hendrick’s Gin and Disaronno Amaretto to create a explosion of decadent flavours.

Cheers and enjoy tonight’s premiere.

Ingredients

  • 2 oz Hendrick’s Gin
  • 2 oz Disaronno Amaretto

Preparation

Add equal parts Gin and Amaretto to a cocktail shaker filled with ice. Stir, do not shake and strain into a chilled cocktail glass. Garnish with a twist or orange peel.

Fresh and delicious – The Beefeater Collins

Beefeater Collins with Coriander Leaves

Beefeater Collins

Two weeks ago, Madtini attended the Toronto Drinks Show, one of the freshest drink, a Beefeater Collins, came from the mixologists at the Beefeater booth. A typical Tom Collins, made with Beefeater 24 Gin and freshened up with a handful or torn coriander leaves. Beefeater is distilled from the neutral spirits with juniper, coriander, orange and lemon peels, angelica, liquorice, almond and orris root. So, pumping up the coriander is only going to enhance the flavours and bring even more freshness to the drink.

And yes I was curious to the origin of the term Beefeater too. The name is likely to come from the ration of beef (as well as veal and mutton) that were provided to the Yoeman Wardens, the guards of the British Royal Palace and the Tower of London. Sounds rational enough, so we’ll go with that.

The Beefeater Collins is a perfect drink for relaxing in a shady spot on the back porch or balcony and figuring out what the clouds overhead look like. There’s an elephant, a unicorn and hmmm… that one looks like Abe Vigoda. (and yes, he’s still alive)

Ingredients

  • 2 oz Beefeater 24 Gin
  • 1 oz fresh lemon juice
  • Club Soda
  • Fresh Coriander

Preparation
Tear up a handful of fresh coriander leaves and drop into bottom of glass. Fill up the glass with ice, add Gin and lemon juice. Top with Club Soda and a few wedges of lemon.

Cheers and have a great sunny, happy, lazy Saturday from Madtini!
