Halloween Cocktails #9, The Dra-Kahlua

Dra-KahluaThe Boris Karloff version of Count Dracula will always be the ‘definitive’ vampire in our minds here at Madtini Labs (although Gary Oldman did an awesome job too). Our interns may go on dreamily about spending eternal life with Twilight’s Edward, Bill or Eric of True Blood – we know that the Count could have kicked their brooding, sparkling butts around Transylvania any day of the week.

Once we read the name of  this drink on the Intoxicologist’s blog we knew we had to include it in our 2010 collection of Halloween drinks. The drink is a classy blend of coffee liqueur and citrus flavours – but be careful we haven’t tested this one is daylight yet.

Cheers and Happy Hallowe’en from Madtini.

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 oz Kahlua
  • 1/2 oz Cognac
  • 1/2 oz Triple Sec
  • 3/4 oz Fresh Lemon Juice

Halloween Cocktails #8, The Dark and Spooky

Dark and SpookyEverything always seems a little spookier on Halloween night. The sky is just a little darker, the wind blowing the leaves around makes you stop and turn, the eyes of the jack-o-lanterns are staring at you from every doorstep. 8 year-olds dressed like Snooki or Lady GaGa and hopped up on adrenalin and sugar run screaming past you, their bleary-eyed parents in useless pursuit.

After all that you’ll probably need a drink to calm your frayed nerves. One of the favorite drinks here at Madtini Intoxicology Labs is the Dark and Stormy. We’re re-naming it the Dark & Spooky for Halloween weekend and throwing in a spooky spider and serving it up with a extra shot of evil.

Cheers and Happy Halloween.

Ingredients

  • 2 1/2 oz dark rum
  • Juice of one Lime
  • Ginger Beer

Preparation
Combine the dark rum and lime juice in a cocktail shaker. Stir, then pour over ice in a rocks glass. Top with Ginger Beer and garnish with a wedge of lime and a large black spider.

Halloween Cocktails #4, The Monster Mash

The Monster MashIn 1962, struggling actor and singer Bobby Pickett was performing with his group The Cordials. One night he did a monologue imitation Boris Korloff while performing the song ‘Little Darlin’ by the Diamonds. The audience went nuts and his fellow band members encouraged Bobby to do something with the Karloff imitation.

Pickett was partially inspired by the current dance craze, the Mashed Potato. The “Monster Mash” went to number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart on October 20 of 1962, just in time for Halloween.

This Monster Mash is a smooth blended drink, and it ideally suited to help any reluctant monster to get his dance-on.

Ingredients

  • 2 oz pineapple juice
  • 1 1/2 oz orange juice
  • 1/2 oz Malibu Coconut rum
  • 1/2 oz tequila
  • 1/2 oz white rum
  • 1/2 oz vodka

Preparation
Add all the ingredients to a blender along with 1 cup of ice. Blend until smooth, then strain into a cocktail glass. Garnish with two thin slices of apple.

Happy Hallowe’en from Madtini.

  • 8-10 blueberries

Ingredients

  • 2 oz Smirnoff Blueberry Vodka
  • 1 oz triple sec
  • 1 oz sweet & sour syrup
  • 2 ripped up basil leaves
  • 8-10 fresh blueberries

Preparation
Wet the rim of a chilled cocktail glass with lemon juice. Turn the glass in a shallow plate of sugar to cover the rim. Muddle the blueberries and ripped up basil leaves in a cocktail shaker until they are shredded. Take a deep whiff of the beautiful mix of smells.
