Scurvy Blaster – Doing Our Part to Prevent Scurvy

The Scurvy Blaster

The Scurvy Blaster

September 19th is Talk Like a Pirate Day, its also Week #6 of Mad Men, and those are the two inspirations that come together to inspire this weeks original Madtini Cocktail.

So in honour of ‘Talk Like a Pirate Day’ and the Mad Men of the high seas, the Madtini cocktail of the week is… the ‘Scurvy Blaster’.

For those who don’t remember your history, Scurvy is a disease that results from a lack of vitamin C. It was especially prevalent amongst people who were on ships from long periods of time without access to perishable vegetables and fruits. Some symptoms of Scurvy are spots on the skin, spongy gums, and bleeding from places that I’d rather not discuss.

So, I say, better safe than sorry… don’t be a knucklehead and wait for the nasty symptoms to develop. Find some orange juice, a lime and a lemon… and of course don’t forget the key ingredient and a favorite amongst pirates, Rum.

Aaarrrrr… bottoms up!!

2 ounces Bacardi Gold rum

2 ounces orange juice

3 squeezes (drops) of a fresh cut lemon

3 squeezes (drops) of a fresh cut lime

Bacardi El Presidente Cocktail

Bacardi El Presidente Cocktail

This week we decided it was time to find a rum based cocktail. We found this recipe for the El Presidente cocktail on the Bacardi Rum website.

While doing some research on the El Presidente we discovered several variations – some included pomegrante juice, pineapple juice or grenadine but since we were planning to use Bacardi Gold rum we figured we’d go with the Bacardi version of El President. It’s a simple cocktail with a gorgeous amber colour and just a hint of vanilla from the Bacardi Gold.

Bacardi Gold El Presidente

2 parts Bacardi Gold rum

1 part dry Vermouth

garnish with a cherry

If you use Bacardi white rum in place of the Gold and garnish with an olive instead of the cherry you’ll have a Bacardi Rum Martini according to the Bacardi site.  Bottoms up!
