Cheers to the Big Easy… The N’awlins Hurricane

New Orleans HurricaneUnfortunately we can only be in New Orleans in spirit today for Mardi Gras (we did have a stack of pancakes though). If you are lucky enough to be there, we totally wish we were you.

Yesterday we posted four of the classic cocktails of the Big Easy – today we add one more, the classic New Orleans Hurricane: a tall glass of awesome fruit flavours with the kick of 3 kinds of rum.

Laissez le Bon temp rouler, y’all!

  • 1 oz dark rum
  • 1 oz light rum
  • 1 oz Baacardi 151 rum
  • 3 oz orange juice
  • 3 oz pineapple juice
  • 1/2 oz grenadine
  • orange zest twist
  • maraschino cherry

Combine all the ingredients in a cocktail shaker filled with ice. Shake then strain into a tall glass (Hurricane glass preferred) filled with crushed ice. Garnish with an orange twist and a maraschino cherry.

Halloween Cocktails #3, Walk with a Zombie

Madtini Walk with a ZombieIts a week before Hallowe’en, but the thought of Zombies is never far from our minds here all year long at Madtini World Headquarters. We spent our Saturday afternoon undercover, as we walked arm in arm with the undead. Here are a few pictures to prove it. We are determined to be protected and not caught without supplies during the inevitable Zombie Apocalypse. We’re stockpiling rum, gin, tequila and vodka,  making sure the doors and windows are heavily secured and that we have adequate ammunition very close at hand. Double Tap!

Even though #22 of the Rules of Zombieland clearly states ‘No Drinking’, we have to stay true to the rules of Madtini. Rule #1 at Madtini states ‘have a good time, but know your limits and play within them’. There’s nothing more embarrassing (and potentially fatal) than partying too hard and waking up to a zombie nibbling on your fingertips.

  • 1 oz white rum
  • 1 oz golden rum
  • 1 oz 151 dark rum
  • 1/2 oz apricot brandy
  • 1/2 oz amaretto
  • 1/2 oz triple sec
  • 1 1/2 oz orange juice
  • 1 1/2 oz pineapple juice
  • 1/2 oz grenadine

Add all the ingredients to a cocktail shaker half-filled with ice except the 151 dark rum & grenadine. Shake well then strain into a tall cocktail glass. Add the 151 dark rum and grenadine to the top of the drink. Garnish with an orange wedge and two maraschino cherries.

Happy Hallowe’en from Madtini.

The Conga Line Cocktail – Cheers to Joan’s red dress!

Conga Line Cocktail

Conga Line Cocktail

It was Christmas in August on Mad Men last week and that meant the Christmas Office Party! Of course, it took an unexpected visit from Lee Garner Jr, heir to the Lucky Strikes fortune to get the real party started at Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce.

But the party did indeed get started: drinks, food and Roger Sterling dressed as Santa Clause passing out cartons of cigarettes. Then there was the Congo Line, as Joan led the group around the office dressed in that red dress… in the words of Roger ‘that red dress with the bow in the back that made you look like a present.

The Mad Men fans here at Madtini Intoxicology Labs have been playing the conga line scene over and over in our heads. We decided to honor Joan the festive Conga Line with this delicious creamy blend of orange liqueur, amaretto and banana liqueur.

Cheers and happy cocktails from Madtini!

  • 3/4 oz grand marnier (or other orange liqueur)
  • 1/2 oz – Disaronno Amaretto
  • 1/2 0z – Creme de Banane
  • 1 oz half & half
  • Dash of Grenadine

Add all the ingredients to a cocktail shaker filled with ice. Shake vigorously and strain into a chilled cocktail glass.

Blended Awesomeness… the Disaronno Deuce

Disaronno Deuce

Disaronno Deuce

The first thing you notice about Amaretto is that it smells like almonds, but there are no almonds or nuts in it at all. Disaronno Amaretto’s distinctive taste comes from apricot kernel oil along with absolute alcohol (Ethyl alcohol containing no more than one percent water), burnt sugar and the pure essence of seventeen selected herbs and fruit.

It all adds up to pure awesomeness… we added fresh strawberries, Grenadine syrup and cream… oh, and topped it off with whipped cream and more sliced strawberries.

Cheers, and happy summer weekending from the gang at Madtini.

  • 2 oz – Disaronno Amaretto
  • 1 oz – Cream
  • 4 Strawberries
  • 1/2 oz – Grenadine Sryup
  • Whipped Cream

Combine the ingredients together in a blender with ice. Pour into a chilled cocktail glass. Garnish with thin wedges of fresh strawberry and whipped cream.

Happy Halloween – Week 11 – Dracula’s Kiss (in a bloody glass)

Dracula's Kiss in Candy Blood dipped glass

Dracula's Kiss in Candy Blood dipped glass

It’s Week 11 of the Madtini Virtual Cocktail Party, and… its less than a week til Halloween. Besides being dedicated to our favorite show Mad Men, we’re also big fans of HBO’s True Blood. Well, we looked all over for a case of TruBlood, but I guess it hasn’t made it up to Canada yet. But we couldn’t leave the vampire theme completely alone, so this week our drink of choice is Dracula’s Kiss, and it is indeed a delicious bloody treat. For extra fun we created a corn syrup blood to make the glasses look extra creepy.

I could have used one of these yesterday while attending the Toronto ZombieWalk Hundreds of zombies, young and old, found their way to Trinity-Bellwoods park just off of Dundas Street West. There were zombies from all walks of life, kings, messiahs, celebrities… I grabbed quite a few pictures and posted them online last night. Click here to enjoy the photos while I sit back with a cocktail – and avoid cleaning up the sugary bloody mess in my kitchen.

Bloody Glasses

  • 1 cup sugar
  • ½ cup corn syrup
  • ½ cup water
  • red food colouring

Combine the sugar, corn syrup and water and cook (without stirring) to 300F (I guessed and it worked out pretty good)
Add the red food colouring.

Turn down the heat and wait a few minutes – the mixture still needs to remain hot – take the glass and dip the top of it into the red moisture. Pull the glass out and carefully turn it back rightside up. Be careful of the hot dripping mixture falling onto your hands.

Watch as it drips down the outside of the glass looking like real blood.

Dracula’s Kiss

  • 1 oz Smirnoff black cherry vodka
  • 1/2 oz grenadine
  • coca-cola
  • maraschino cherries for garnish

1. Coat the bottom of a highball glass (i used a martini glass, it looked cooler) with grenadine.
2. Add the ice and black cherry vodka
3. Fill the rest with coke
4. Garnish with the cherries

Happy Halloween and cheers from Madtini World Headquarters!
