It’s Friday Cocktail-O-Clock – Margarita Caliente

Margarita CalienteTuesday we celebrated National Margarita Day with 6 Fiesta-Worthy Margaritas. To celebrate Friday we’ve decided to turn up the heat by adding some red chili peppers. You may want to have a glass of ice water standing by to put out the fire.

Cheers and here’s to the weekend!

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 oz tequila
  • 3/4 oz Grand Marnier
  • 3/4 oz Triple Sec
  • 2 oz Sweet & Sour Mix
  • 1 red chili pepper
  • salt from rim

Preparation
Wet the rim of a cocktail glass with a piece of lime, then turn the rim in a shallow plate of coarse salt. Garnish with a 2 inch piece of the chili.

Slice a red hot chili pepper into slices. Place the pieces in the bottom of a cocktail shaker, add a splash of the Grand Marnier and muddle for 20 seconds or so. Add the tequila, triple sec, sweet and sour mix, orange juice and the rest of the Grand Marnier to the cocktail shaker. Add ice to the shaker, then shake the mixture for 10 seconds. Strain and serve.

Orange Creamsicle Cupcakes with Orange Liqueur

Orange Creamsicle Cupcakes with Orange LiqueurWhen I read on our Madtini Facebook wall that Maryann over at TiniCakes was going to make Orange Creamsicle Cupcakes with Orange Liqueur I choked on my olive with excitement.

Luckily, our weekend intern Felippe sprang into action, retrieving a fresh olive for my martini as I picked myself up from the floor. I weakly typed back that we’d love to see the results when she was done. Then I collapsed.

As you can see from this picture the results look absolutely delicious. The TiniCakes site is full of this, and other drool-worthy treats like Dark Chocolate Valentine’s Cupcakes with Chambord Ganache or the Pumpkin Cupcakes with Maple Cream Cheese Icing.

Maryann was generous enough to let us post her recipe here. So, here’s what you’ll need to get started.

Then head over to TiniCake for the rest of the recipe and all of the instructions.

6 Fiesta-Worthy Margaritas to Celebrate National Margarita Day

National Margarita DayTuesday, February 22nd is National Margarita Day in the U.S., and we will stand shoulder to shoulder at the bar in our giant sombreros with our southern brothers and sisters on this most important celebration.

The origins of the Margarita are disputed, and the Wikipedia page sums up some of the most popular theories. But, no one can argue that the Margarita is a dang good drink, in fact it was the most ordered mixed drink in America in 2008 according to Cheers On-Premise Handbook representing 18% of all orders (behind were Martini, Run & Coke, Vodka & Tonic and the Cosmopolitan). According to Brown-Forman in 2008 Americans ordered an average of 185,000 Margaritas per hour. Now that my friends is a happy hour!

Halloween Cocktails #9, The Dra-Kahlua

Dra-KahluaThe Boris Karloff version of Count Dracula will always be the ‘definitive’ vampire in our minds here at Madtini Labs (although Gary Oldman did an awesome job too). Our interns may go on dreamily about spending eternal life with Twilight’s Edward, Bill or Eric of True Blood – we know that the Count could have kicked their brooding, sparkling butts around Transylvania any day of the week.

Once we read the name of  this drink on the Intoxicologist’s blog we knew we had to include it in our 2010 collection of Halloween drinks. The drink is a classy blend of coffee liqueur and citrus flavours – but be careful we haven’t tested this one is daylight yet.

Cheers and Happy Hallowe’en from Madtini.

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 oz Kahlua
  • 1/2 oz Cognac
  • 1/2 oz Triple Sec
  • 3/4 oz Fresh Lemon Juice
  • 1/2 oz Simple Syrup

Preparation
Combine the ingredients in a cocktail shaker half-filled with ice. Shake, then strain into your chilled martini glass. Add a blood-orange wedge s garnish.

Halloween Cocktails #3, Walk with a Zombie

Madtini Walk with a ZombieIts a week before Hallowe’en, but the thought of Zombies is never far from our minds here all year long at Madtini World Headquarters. We spent our Saturday afternoon undercover, as we walked arm in arm with the undead. Here are a few pictures to prove it. We are determined to be protected and not caught without supplies during the inevitable Zombie Apocalypse. We’re stockpiling rum, gin, tequila and vodka,  making sure the doors and windows are heavily secured and that we have adequate ammunition very close at hand. Double Tap!

Even though #22 of the Rules of Zombieland clearly states ‘No Drinking’, we have to stay true to the rules of Madtini. Rule #1 at Madtini states ‘have a good time, but know your limits and play within them’. There’s nothing more embarrassing (and potentially fatal) than partying too hard and waking up to a zombie nibbling on your fingertips.

Ingredients

  • 1 oz white rum
  • 1 oz golden rum
  • 1 oz 151 dark rum
  • 1/2 oz apricot brandy
  • 1/2 oz amaretto
  • 1/2 oz triple sec
  • 1 1/2 oz orange juice
  • 1 1/2 oz pineapple juice
  • 1/2 oz grenadine

Preparation
Add all the ingredients to a cocktail shaker half-filled with ice except the 151 dark rum & grenadine. Shake well then strain into a tall cocktail glass. Add the 151 dark rum and grenadine to the top of the drink. Garnish with an orange wedge and two maraschino cherries.

Happy Hallowe’en from Madtini.

Halloween Cocktails, #1 Boo-berry Vodka Martini

Boo-Berry Vodka MartiniHalloween is still 13 days away according to our dicey math skills. We thought we’d get an obvious spooky cocktail out of the way first. We present the Boo-berry Vodka Martini. We brought home a bottle of the highly aromatic Smirnoff Blueberry flavoured vodka, combined it with a bit of triple sec and some sprite, and garnished it with a few fresh blueberries and a single black spider.

Ingredients

  • 2 oz Smirnoff Blueberry Vodka
  • 1 oz triple sec
  • 1 oz sweet & sour syrup
  • 2 ripped up basil leaves
  • 8-10 fresh blueberries

Preparation
Wet the rim of a chilled cocktail glass with lemon juice. Turn the glass in a shallow plate of sugar to cover the rim. Muddle the blueberries and ripped up basil leaves in a cocktail shaker until they are shredded. Take a deep whiff of the beautiful mix of smells. Add the sweet & sour syrup, triple sec, blueberry flavoured vodka, and 4 ice cubes. Shake, then strain into the chilled cocktail glass.
